Kacin: “We need to recover from this virus. I will not say we should ignore it, but we do need to isolate it and prevent it from overpowering us!”

Jelko Kacin has taken over the position of the official spokesperson for the Crisis staff of the Republic of Slovenia. He wants to reassure the public and let them know that the work of Janez Janša’s Government is going in the right direction, as was already proven by the implemented measures. »I think we need to look at the measures in a broader sense. Every member state of the European Union will face this danger that the coronavirus brings to the entire continent, differently. Europe is now the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic,« Kacin said and added that the National Assembly and the National Council are going to implement many of the Government’s measures this week.

»We did not get this request. This is something the National Security Secretariat was working on, rather than it being an event to which they would invite everyone that needs to know what is happening and needs to help,« was Jelko Kacin‘s diplomatic response to the mistakes that Šarec’s Government made. He also mentioned Italy and the focal point of the epidemic in the northern part of the country. He believes Slovenia should have reacted as soon as Italy established a quarantine. He added that the National Assembly and the National Council are going to adopt the urgent measures prepared by Janša’s Government this week.

Kacin mentioned France and its President Emmanuel Macron as an example of credulity and ignorance of the gravity of the situation. At first, Macron criticized the actions of some European countries, including Slovenia. But now, due to the escalation of the epidemic in France, he has taken strict measures. »That is why tonight, all the leaders of the European Union and the European Commission, together with the European Parliament, will be discussing their next steps and how to protect the Union. European Union will close all its external borders. Slovenia, being a country with the external border, has already done that, and that is our advantage.«

Diplomatic, logistical and organizational efforts
The official spokesperson for the Crisis staff of the Republic of Slovenia, Kacin, emphasized how much diplomatic, logistical and organizational efforts Janša’s Government, the Civil Protection, Slovenian Armed Forces, medical staff and other volunteers are investing in limiting the spread of the coronavirus in Slovenia, with the implemented measures. He added that Slovenia helped get a mother with her prematurely born baby to Prague. An even bigger action was done by the new Government – letting the transitional traffic pass through Slovenia. »It is precisely because of the external border closure that we were forced to take diplomatic, logistical and organizational measures, in order to let thousands of lorries that were stuck at the Slovenian-Italian border pass,« Kacin explained on the Aktualno show, talking to the anchor Luka Svetina. We need the military for other things, not for monitoring whether the citizens are following the instructions Some of the other European countries, including Serbia, have sent the army to the streets, to monitor their citizens’ compliance with the implemented measures. Kacin responded to this, stating that in the current crisis, we need Slovenian soldiers for completely different purposes.

»We need the military for other things. We need it for logistical assistance, for the preparation of additional capacities, they will also distribute protective equipment for the Civil Protection. There will be more helicopter transports to hospitals. The military is learning how to decontaminate the helicopters daily. A number of measures have been taken to help the Slovenian healthcare system,« Kacin told the Slovenian public. Every infected medical professional is an additional loss in the fight to limit the COVID-19 epidemic in Slovenia. In the first days of the crisis, the Slovenian public was surprised by the high number of infected healthcare staff. »What is most difficult is that the virus is spreading among the medical staff. They are very hard to replace. 104 medical students are volunteering in the call centre, working in various shifts. This is the first reserve that can replace any of the infected medical workers. There is also a team of six young doctors coming from South Africa,« Kacin described the severity of the situation.

Slovenian citizens are aware of the situation in which Slovenia has found itself
The official spokesperson for the Crisis staff of the Republic of Slovenia noted that the majority of Slovenian citizens is following the measures adopted by Janša’s Government. According to him, nobody wants to see the Italian scenario happen to Slovenia. »Just look around, today is a workday, but there are no people, no vehicles on the streets. People are self-disciplining and understand that without taking the measures seriously, they are taking on a much greater responsibility. Without restrictions, without self-control of the entire Slovenian public, we cannot overcome this crisis. We need to recover from this virus. I will not say we should ignore it, but we do need to isolate it and prevent it from overpowering us,« Kacin believes. You can listen to more of what Kacin shared with us in the video.
