On Thursday, Susan Pompeo, the wife of the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, visited Ljubljana. Accompanied by the wife of the Slovenian Prime Minister, Urška Bačovnik Janša, she also visited the Ljubljana Cathedral, where she was greeted by the Auxilary Bishop of Ljubljana, Anton Jamnik.

Wife of the Slovenian Prime Minister, Urška Bačovnik Janša, and the wife of the US Secretary of State, Susan Pompeo, walked through the centre of Ljubljana on Thursday, as part of the programme of the visit.

Susan Pompeo was already in a hurry to leave for Bled, where her husband was meeting with the representatives of the Slovenian political leadership, but she still took a few minutes to visit the cathedral. Bishop Anton Jamnik told her about the long-time presence of Christianity in Slovenia, which began in the Roman times, and he also told her about the history of the Ljubljana archdiocese and the cathedral.  Among other things, Susan Pompeo was interested to know what percentage of the Slovenian population is Catholic.

According to Bishop Jamnik, the wife of the US Secretary of State was very impressed by the cathedral. She was especially fascinated by the altar angels, the work of the Italian sculptor Francesco Robba. Susan Pompeo told the newspaper Družina that in every city she travels to with her husband, she visits the cathedral. “The Ljubljana Cathedral is especially important to me because Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of our son, Nicholas. I have heard about the murals, the frescoes, and the beautiful images in the cathedral, and it certainly did not disappoint,” she said.
